Cheltenham Badlands
Queenston Shale laid down 445 million years ago and exposed by early-1900s farming. Viewed from a 60-metre boardwalk — walking on the shale itself is banned.

- Walking on the shale is banned. The 0.32 km Badlands Trail and the boardwalk are the only access.

The rust-red rolling shale everyone has seen a photograph of. It’s Queenston Shale, laid down 445 to 450 million years ago and exposed in the early 1900s by land clearing and grazing — the landscape is spectacular because of a farming mistake, which is either ironic or fitting depending on your mood.
It’s a provincially significant Earth Science ANSI. Only about 20% of the 36-hectare site is actual badlands topography, and you view it from a 60-metre boardwalk and platform. The 0.32 km Badlands Trail is the only walking on offer.
You cannot walk on the shale. That’s the whole reason the boardwalk exists — foot traffic was destroying the formation.
Booking, and the trap
2026 season: 8 May to 16 November, dawn to dusk, reservation only, paid online in advance. There is no on-site payment.
Per vehicle: $10 + HST for 90 minutes or $18 + HST for 3 hours on weekdays; $20 or $35 + HST on weekends and holidays.
Your CVC and TRCA passes are not valid here — this site is run by the Ontario Heritage Trust, a third booking system again. Arriving on foot or by bike is free, but there is nowhere legal to park nearby, so that’s harder than it sounds.

Note: we’ve left the drive time off deliberately — the published figures for the Caledon cluster don’t hold up locally, and a wrong number here is worse than no number.
