The gorge
The Elora Gorge is the headline — twenty-two-metre limestone walls along the Grand River, with hiking, tubing, kayaking and camping. There is nothing like it in Dufferin.
The two downtowns
Elora is the more polished of the pair: shops, the mill, and the Wellington County Museum with its own trails. Fergus is the working town — Confederation Park along the Grand for walking, biking and fishing, and the Fergus Grand Theatre, a municipal performing-arts venue worth checking when Theatre Orangeville’s schedule does not suit.
The trail between them
The Elora Cataract Trailway runs 47 km, connecting the Grand and Credit watersheds and passing straight through Fergus. A 4 km trestle bridge trail links the two towns directly — the easiest way to do both on foot or by bike.
Fergus also hosts the Scottish Festival and Highland Games each August, which is the one weekend to either plan around or avoid, depending on your feelings about massed pipe bands.
