About 5,800 hectares of marsh, water and bush around the 1,400-hectare Luther Lake, which was created by a dam in 1954. With 263-plus recorded species, it’s one of the best birding sites in the province — and the kind of place where a good morning genuinely rewards getting up early.

Seasonal rules that catch people out
- Paddling opens after 31 July. Motorboats after 1 September. These dates protect nesting season and they are enforced.
- Scheduled hunting days are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. If you are not hunting — and especially if you’re birding with kids or a dog — go on a Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday.
